Abstract
Heyman's theorem and the Prager-Marcal-Shield theory of optimal plastic design are generalized to include the cost of joints (connections) in the optimization procedure. The significance of the cost of joints was emphasized by Witteveen and Tolman at a International union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics Symposium and by Shanley in the context of aircraft structures.
