Abstract
This paper is concerned with achieving realistic optimal designs for Euler-Bernoulli cantilevers. The objective is to maximize the load to maximum deflection ration for a specified length and weight of material in the presence of geometric and behavioral constraints. This goal may be achieved by either of the following design objectives: 1. Minimize the maximum deflection for a given loading condition, length, and weight of material: and 2. Maximize the load for a given maximum deflection, length, and weight of material. Both of these objectives yield the same optimal design: however, the former is used in the formulation because it simplifies the optimization procedure.
