Vibration of Conical Shells Subjected to Torsion
Publication: Journal of the Engineering Mechanics Division
Volume 94, Issue 1
Abstract
An analytical and experimental study was performed to predict the dynamic behavior of a conical frustum loaded in torsion. The analysis was based upon linear Donnell-type shell equations. The longitudinal and circumferential inertia terms were neglected. The Galerkin method was used to obtain an infinite frequency determinant for the resulting equilibrium equations. The determinant was truncated and solved on a digital computer for the resonant frequencies and modal shapes. Experimental vibrational frequencies and modal shapes were obtained for an isotropic conical frustum loaded by a static torsional moment. The experimental data were in fair agreement with the analysis.
