Aircraft Arresting System
Publication: Journal of the Aero-Space Transport Division
Volume 91, Issue 2
Abstract
The feasibility of arresting transport type aircraft to prevent overshooting runways has been assured by field tests. A twin-engine Convair aircraft was used for initial arrestment tests to determine if the transport type fuselage could withstand the forces imposed by arrestment. Live tests with a Boeing 720 jet transport aircraft were conducted using a large capacity arresting system developed for that purpose. Characteristics of an arresting system suitable for civil use have been determined. Application of arresting systems for use by transport type aircraft depends on policy decisions by the government and acceptance of this safety concept by the aviation industry.
