Runway Traction

Publication: Journal of the Aero-Space Transport Division
Volume 91, Issue 2

Abstract

The effects of water, ice, and slush on traction characteristics of runway pavement were investigated by the Federal Aviation Agency and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Water on the runway can cause loss of traction as a result of aquaplaning of the aircraft tires below speeds of landing or takeoff. The speed at which aquaplaning occurs is related to the tire pressure. Slush also causes aquaplaning and induces drag of critical proportions for slush depths in excess of 1/2-in. Tests of various runway traction conditions have shown that braking data taken by a test vehicle can be related to aircraft braking. A new device for measuring traction has been developed to aid in determining aircraft braking criteria and standards.
