Contract Arrangements in the Third World

Abstract
Standard contract provisions and communications may not be the most appropriate for all construction work in third world countries. The main criteria for appropriateness reflect, firstly, a favorable degree of local participation and, secondly, the use of methods more suited to local conditions both economically and socially. A review of past and present practices shows a tendency to adhere still to standard western methods. There has been a lack of innovation but the need for more appropriate approaches is being recognized.
