Who Gives a Damn?

Abstract
ASCE is the only engineering society that has recognized the problem and is actually trying to provide opportunities for minority youths who are considering engineering as a profession. Since 1976, ASCE has sponsored a summer institute for minority high school youths between their junior and senior year. To date, the program has been successful. One of the main reasons for success is the involvement of the local sections supporting the program, however only 22 out of 78 sections are participating. If more sections would participate, it could triple or quadruple the number of high school students exposed to the program and, thereby, demonstrate more forcibly concerns about increasing minorities within the engineering profession.
