Abstract
The claim of modern surveyors to professional distinction is being debated among a number of factions. Possible causes for this debate are discussed in terms of Sir Francis Bacon's call for all professionals to be debtors to their profession. Basic professional criteria are discussed along with the history of surveying professionalism. Courses of action, including concern for surveyor education and public esteem, are recommended to rebut claims against the professional stature of surveyors.
