Abstract
In a modern university, the Civil Engineering Department can adhere to the dual roles of research and educating a new generation of practitioners. A balanced faculty dedicated to both applied research and professional practice is the key to this approach. Efforts that have been made at California State University, Los Angeles, toward building such a diversified faculty are presented. A goal for minimum percentage of full-time faculty to possess doctorate degree and professional engineering registration is established. To achieve the goal, and starting from the present faculty, various methods have been used, i.e., to emphasize the significance of industrial experience, to encourage continuing education, and to establish a clear objective in recruiting.
