Abstract
The future generations of ASCE leadership are now enrolled in our graduate schools. It is essential that ASCE establish a viable bond with this group of embryo professionals. This union will be difficult to achieve and will compel much unitlateral action by the Society. Educational constraints, especially time, imposed on graduate students greatly hamper their participation and reduce their role mainly to that of an interested bystander. This contact with the Society can provide professional guidance, technical information, and the basis for active future contribution by the students. The pressures of graduate training severely limit the extracurricular activities of the students and if ASCE is to compete with the many other demands for the limited spare time, it must make it obvious that participation is in the best interest of the student. This may require a completed review of existing policies concerned with student members of the Society.
