Abstract
ASCE should address itself to meeting the professional needs of graduate students in civil engineering. The graduate student should be made more aware of his role as a professional in the society which he is about to enter. This awareness can only be achieved by improving communication between student chapter members and professional engineers. The results of a questionnaire completed by graduate students at the University of California, Berkeley, showed conclusively that these students lack the understanding of the concepts of the ASCE organization. A means to create better understanding is to inform the student chapter members of the activities of ASCE so that they may become involved. The questionnaire clearly pointed out that students would attend ASCE meetings if invited. ASCE currently has many activities that students may attend but do not because the majority of the students are not informed. The student chapter member should be treated as an integral part of the ASCE organization.
