Abstract
Metric has been legal in Britain since 1897. The present concerted change and the completion target of 1975 was decided by industry in 1965. The change is voluntary but there is a need for overall coordination. This is the role of the Metrication Board which also has the task of publicizing the change. Another important form of coordination is provided by the national standards organization. The construction industry was one of the first to plan the change. It should be substantially completed by 1973. Metrication is an opportunity to introduce rationalization controlling dimensions and materials in coordinated sizes. An outlined program has set a target of 1975 for 75% total production in metric. Experience has shown that at the planning stage, training needs tend to be exaggerated. Wherever metric has been adopted it has been readily accepted. Industry cannot go metric in isolation. Metric must be the normal system of measurement in all parts of life.
