Retirement Plan Study

Publication: Engineering Issues: Journal of Professional Activities
Volume 96, Issue 1

Abstract

To determine if ASCE should sponsor a retirement plan for its members, a survey was made of governments, teachers, unions, professional societies, consulting engineers and large industries to obtain a description of their plans and to make a comparison of various plans. ASCE members were also solicited to evaluate their needs and desires. The results indicated that all but professional societies and consulting engineers were 100% covered by some retirement plan. It was found that the agencies and firms who had plans had Keogh type or Corporation type plans. The basic features of each of these plans were investigated. From these statistics it was concluded that ASCE should sponsor a plan. This plan could be constructed as to cover both corporations and sole proprietorships or partnerships. Portability could be built into the plan to allow movement amongst ASCE, PEPP, and AIA members and member firms.
