Residual Undrained Deformation from Cyclic Loading

Publication: Journal of the Geotechnical Engineering Division
Volume 108, Issue 4

Abstract

Residual undrained deformation of anisotropically consolidated soil samples under cyclic loading is investigated. The magnitude of residual deformation is influenced by factors such as initial stress condition, excess pore pressure generated by the cyclic loading, and soil properties. A semi-empirical model derived from hyperbolic fitting is developed for predicting residual undrain deformation during cyclic loading. This analytical model consists of five parameters: /c, /φ, k, n, and Rf, in which k, n, and Rf can be determined either from static or cyclic tests. Based on the results of this study, the values of parameters determined from the cyclic test show close agreement with the values determined from static tests. The comparison of predicted and measured residual undrained deformation of samples during cyclic tests shows excellent agreement. This semi-empirical model can be used to estimate residual strains after cyclic loading of soil elements subjected to anisotropic initial stress conditions, such as soil elements under a footing or in slopes.
