Publication: Journal of the Geotechnical Engineering Division
Volume 108, Issue 4

Abstract

New Melones Dam, located on the Stanislaus River in central California, is a zoned earth and rockfill structure with a maximum height above foundation at embankment centerline of 637 feet and with a volume of about 15.9 million cubic yards. The dam consists of a rolled rockfill embankment with a central impervious core inclined upstream. This paper describes the site geology, foundation treatment, embankment construction procedures, embankment properties and instrumentation. The influence of site conditions and fill requirements on the degree of foundation excavation, surface treatment and grouting patterns are discused. Sources of construction materials and methods of excavation, stockpiling, materials processing and fill placement procedures are described.
