Field Study of Moisture Effects on Slab Movements

Publication: Journal of the Geotechnical Engineering Division
Volume 104, Issue 4

Abstract

A study is made of 69 residential slabs located in an area of expansive clay. The slabs, all built in conformance to FHA specifications, had been in existence for several years. The slabs had experienced significant differential vertical movements. Differential vertical movements are shown to correlate with differences in moisture contents from the center to the corners of the slabs. Trees planted near the houses are shown to have major influences upon slab behavior. The tree root systems absorbed moisture from the soil causing subsequent drying under the slab edges.
