Abstract

This article presents a one-dimensional consolidation theory for an inelastic normally consolidated clay layer subjected to cyclic loading. Analytic solutions predict the steady-state excess pore pressures and settlements that take place after a large number of cycles. Approximate solutions provide upper and lower bounds for the settlement history. Finite difference solutions agree with the theoretical analyses and provide useful predictions in case of rapid cyclic loading. Design charts and an example illustrate the use of the prediction method in practice.
