Effective-Stress Parameters of Anisotropic Soil
Publication: Journal of the Geotechnical Engineering Division
Volume 104, Issue 1
Abstract
The application of anisotropic elasticity in soil mechanics is rapidly increasing. It is, therefore, essential to direct such application in such a way that fundamental concepts relating to effective stresses are not violated or ignored. In particular distinction must be drawn between effective stress parameters and total stress parameters. Bounds on the values of.effective stress. parameters have been derived for incompressible soil on the basis of energy considerations. It has been shown that these bounds are different from those on total stress parameters. It is suggested that the general application of such concepts to all soils is somewhat premature. Further work in this direction is needed.
