Relative Motion of Two Points during an Earthquake

Publication: Journal of the Geotechnical Engineering Division
Volume 102, Issue 11

Abstract

The design of a facility to withstand an earthquake must permit the connections between its parts to accommodate relative motions. A wave train or earthquake motion propagates horizontally between two points separated by a distance, ib. If the wave shape is not changed during passage and if the wave velocity is ic, the time lag between the motion of the two points is b/c, and the relative motion could be simply computed by shifting the time history of motion by b/c to obtain the motion at point B and subtracting the result from the motion at point A. When a shallow layer of soil is underlain by stiffer rock, c is the wave velocity in the rock.
