Structural Behavior of Wood Shear Wall Assemblies

Publication: Journal of Structural Engineering
Volume 111, Issue 3

Abstract

The paper is a summary of the results of an experimental program conducted at the University of Texas to investigate the structural behavior of 7 shear wall assemblies used in manufactured housing. Variables studied include the size and location of the shear wall within the assembly, the number of glued sides of hardwood paneling, and the number of floor joists beneath the shear wall. It was found that walls located on the windward side of the assembly had higher ultimate strengths. In addition, measurements of slip between the shear wall and side walls indicate that there may be significant load transfer into the side wall. Also, the side walls, it was found, do not provide rigid vertical support to the joists beneath the shear wall, as currently assumed in design.
