Controller Designs for Seismic-Excited Buildings with Bounded Actuators

Abstract

Two design techniques are proposed to improve disturbance attenuation of seismic-excited buildings with bounded actuators. The first technique is based strictly on the quadratic stabilization with a disturbance attenuation technique and the second relies on a multiobjective approach that combines the first technique with constraints on the inputs. The second technique makes use of the available information regarding actuator capacity and peak magnitude of disturbance; hence, its results are less conservative. The sufficient conditions for feasibility of a full-state feedback controller are expressed in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). For the output feedback design, it is assumed that ground acceleration is available for measurement and the controller is assumed to have an observer-based structure. The validity and applicability of the two proposed techniques are illustrated using simulations of a six-story building subjected to earthquake.
