Building on Mars

Publication: Civil Engineering Magazine Archive
Volume 75, Issue 10

Abstract

Recent research conducted at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has explored the issues involved in designing and constructing habitats on the surface of Mars through a simultaneous consideration of structural engineering and architecture. The goal was to design self-sustaining habitats for humans living in extreme conditions in an effort to facilitate the development of a viable community that would be safe, efficient, and capable of expansion. This project represents a collaborative effort in which civil and aerospace engineers are working with architects to propose a possible solution for structural design on Mars.
