Abstract
State transportation agencies continue to seek better ways to identify road improvement needs. Research and development funds have been allocated to seek efficient methods for identifying accident locations using computer-associated procedures. Two states, North Carolina and Kentucky, have engaged in these efforts on a statewide basis. With the aid of consultants, these agencies have sought ways to increase the coverage and detail of accident location data. The research examined the needs of the states and their present methodology. An array of possible new methodologies were examined and recommendations were made to the states for implementation in subsequent phases. The recommended accident location systems are being implemented in subsequent phases, with a primary objective being the use of the locator system for other highway purposes.
