The Rectangular Free Overfall
Publication: Journal of the Hydraulics Division
Volume 94, Issue 3
Abstract
For the horizontal rectangular free overfall, in 1936 Rouse found that the end depth, ye, is equal to 0.715 times the critical depth, yc. Later Delleur, Dooge, and Gent found that, in general, ye/yc is a function mainly of the relative slope, So/Sc, in which So = the bed slope, and Sc = the critical slope. When the flow in the channel upstream of the free overfall is supercritical, it is physically more realistic to study the variation of the ratio ye/yo, in which yo = the uniform flow depth (or the control depth, as the case may be).
