Abstract
An optimization model is developed to determine operating policies for the Granite Reef Aqueduct of the Central Arizona Project CAP with the objective of minimizing the on-peak hour pumping while meeting downstream delivery and constraints. The section of aqueduct considered for optimization contains four pumping stations, four inverted siphons, two turnouts, 13 check structures, and 19 pools. Pump schedules and gate positions and flows are determined on the basis of a steady state, linearized analysis of the hydraulics at 2 hr intervals for a week. A transient analysis is carried out for the purposes of: (1)Verifying the linearized analysis; (2)determining the intrahour transient generated by pumping and gate motions; (3)obtaining suitable gate motions which are functions of time. Linear programming is used for the optimization with decomposition in time and along the aqueduct length. An iteration and updating procedure is used to reduce linearization errors.
