Facilities Planning in Rural Alaska

Abstract
The housing problems of rural Alaska magnify the need for adequate comprehensive planning which is viewed as continuing process. Extreme climatic conditions, remoteness, and lack of economic resources coupled with high costs and multi-agency involvement necessitate integrated site development reflecting total community needs. A specific planning and mapping sequence for a rural village is presented to illustrate how a housing program can be a catalyst for development. Planning is viewed as an evolving process where the input of the community is crucial and it is linked to current implementation.
