Abstract

The author defines Standards and points out that the designer determines the several elements of a highway. Interchange spacing on freeways must be liberal. Major interchanges are most important requiring the cooperation of several disciplines. A new design is proposed wherein no ramps are provided at the point of crossing of two freeways. Control of traffic by metering and surveillance is discussed. Terracing where right-of-way is limited, as along rivers, is advocated. Joint freeway and housing projects are discussed and advocated to lessen objections due to tenant relocation. Caution is recommended for reverse flow roadways and rail transit in the median. Freeways will need adjustments after they are opened to traffic despite the greatest care in planning and design and administrators must be prepared for it. The writer also presents a discussion on finances and aesthetics of highway tunnels.
