Surveying: The Profession and Its Requirements
Publication: Journal of the Surveying and Mapping Division
Volume 108, Issue 1
Abstract
Two definitions of surveying are discussed. The A.S.C.E. definition which is a broad definition that includes a. land surveying, b. engineering surveyors, c. cartographic surveying, aerial surveying services, and cartography; and a definition typical of those used by boards of registration that is confined to land surveying are presented. The requirements depend on the definition. Whatever definition of surveying is used by a state board of registration, the board is obligated to assure that professional areas of practice permitted by the registered surveyor are reflected in the requirements for education, experience and examination.
