Shape Factors in Bearing Capacity Equation
Publication: Journal of the Soil Mechanics and Foundations Division
Volume 96, Issue 4
Abstract
In the classical bearing capacity equation factors Ny, Ng, Ne are determined on the basis of two-dimensional conditions. Three-dimensional conditions, which are obtained in the case of loading areas of arbitrary shape but finite dimensions, are taken into account by the shape factors sy, sq, Sc used with the bearing capacity factors with corresponding subscripts. For some of the most common shapes, such as circular, rectangular, and triangular loading areas, the sy shape factors have been established empirically for vertical loading.
