Abstract

Layered soils are a common occurrence in nature, and the design of foundations to be supported by such soils is often encountered in foundation engineering. Theoretical stress and displacement analysis of soil systems under vertical loading has been done by several investigators (3,4,5,22,33). Burmister (5) developed the theory of stresses and displacements in a two-layer system by using the theory of elasticity and showed the importance of the ratio of the radius of the loaded area to the thickness of the first layer, and the ratio of the elastic modulus of the second layer to that of the first layer.
