Mine Subsidence and Support Methods in Pittsburgh Area

Publication: Journal of the Soil Mechanics and Foundations Division
Volume 96, Issue 4

Abstract

Coal mining in the Pittsburgh area was initiated by British soldiers in 1759 on Mt. Washington overlooking Fort Pitt, the site of the present City of Pittsburgh (4). In early years, coal was mined in largely agricultural areas remote to the centers of population and as a result, surface subsidence was not a major problem.
