Abstract
As a shock wave passes over the surface of the ground, air is forced into the pores of the soil. The energy contained in the shock wave forces the air through the soil in a net downward direction. As the air moves through the pores of the soil, it alters the pressure of the fluid contained in the pores and, consequently, the stress state of the soil through which the air from the shock wave passes.
