Digestion: Concentration-Loading-Time Limits

Abstract
The anaerobic stabilization of wastewater sludges is a reliable and efficient process that has and will continue to be widely used in many of the medium sized water renovation installations. A sizable portion of the capital and operating costs of such plants are associated with the digesters as are numerous operational problems. These costs and problems can be reduced by careful design and operation based on an understanding of the process and the exploration of the process to its limit. The concentration, organic loading, and detention time limits are outlined herein.
