Clean Air Management in Allegheny County, PA
Publication: Journal of the Sanitary Engineering Division
Volume 96, Issue 5
Abstract
Allegheny County has expanded and modernized its air monitoring network. A 17-station continuous monitoring aerometric network of over 100 sensors is being installed for air pollution surveillance to supplement the existing 44 station network. Data are telemetered via telephone lines to an online computer for immediate readout of results. Particulate pollution has been reduced by over 84% in the last two decades. Gaseous pollution is currently receiving major attention. Control measures for sulfur reduction include a 750-ft high stack, cryogenic removal of sulfur, process changes and use of low sulfur fuels. New and more stringent regulations are being promulgated. Enforcement action has been stepped up. Regulations include control requirements during stagnation buildup periods.
