Abstract
A mathematical model has been formulated for biological filters based on the independent variables of depth, recirculation, hydraulic rate, temperature, and BOD loading, with the BOD remaining in the effluent as the dependent variable. Extensive experimental data were used and a high multiple correlation coefficient was obtained. The study indicates that all of the independent variables except the hydraulic rate have a signigicant effect on BOD reduction in the liquid being treated. It was also indicated that the recirculation of organisms adapted to the filter environment aid in increasing the BOD removal.
