Deterministic Torsional Building Response to Winds
Publication: Journal of the Structural Division
Volume 105, Issue 12
Abstract
The dynamic response of tall buildings to wind loads, including the torsional degree-of-freedom, is investigated using a sinusoidal pseudo-turbulent representation of atmospheric gusts superimposed on a mean wind velocity. Torsional effects are due to the offsets between a hypothetical aerodynamic center and the cross-sectional center of mass relative to the elastic axis or both. Cases which were found to contain significant torsional response when using this deterministic approach show similar characteristics when analyzed by a probabilistic method. Thus it appears that the deterministic approach provides valuable physical insight to the problem. This is utilized in the paper for validating approximations associated with nonlinear terms in the wind loads and the time dependent portion of the aerodynamic damping.
