Abstract

Probably the most important feature of sprinkler irrigation compared with flood and furrow techniques is that sprinkler irrigation can offer a greater degree of control of the distribution and the quantity of water applied. This point would be denied by some, but the control that is possible with sprinkler irrigation has not yet been achieved to any great extent. Effective control presupposes good design, in the first place, and subsequent careful operation. The most significant factors appear to be water pressure, wind velocity, and sprinkler spacing and arrangement. Effective control cannot be achieved on a system for which the initial design is bad and for which passing account only is taken of operating pressure, wind effects, and sprinkler layouts.
