Sedimentation Effects of Hydroelectric Development

Publication: Journal of the Power Division
Volume 98, Issue 2

Abstract

Hydrogeneration development studies must investigate all aspects of surrounding regimens. In the case of the harbor at Charleston, South Carolina, federal expenditure of about $3,000,000 annually for maintenance dredging largely due to a density current regimen, was set up as a result of upstream hydroelectric development. Solution to the problem entails rediversion of a major river and the subsequent readjustment to past regimen patterns. The planner-designer in the hydrodevelopment field must be constantly aware of the disturbance to the ecosystem that such development might entail.
