Abstract

Auburn dam will be the principal feature in the Bureau of Reclamation's Auburn-Folsom South Unit in California. The dam is a double curvature thin arch, 685 feet high, and will have a concrete volume of 6,000,000 cu yd of concrete. Extensive foundation investigations, including in situ and laboratory testing, were required to evaluate a complex foundation. Rock tests were utilized in the finite element method of analysis to obtain values of deformation moduli throughout the foundation. Major features of the dam including the spillway, outlet works, penstocks, power plant, and diversion tunnel are described. Methods used to analyze the dam are outlined.
