Dual-Purpose Desalted Water-Nuclear Power Plant
Abstract
A study of the feasibility of constructing a dual-purpose plant to produce nuclear power and 150 mgd desalted water is reported. The plant is to be located on a man-made island off the Bolsa Chica State Beach in Orange County, California. A description of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, the area water supply, the interest of the local electrical utilities in the plant construction, the type and capacity of both desalted water and the power units, and the site selection and design of a man-made island is included. Conceptual designs and construction cost estimates are given for the reference plant configuration selected, the site selected, and the product water line for conveying and blending the desalted water at the Diemer Filtration Plant of the Metropolitan Water District, together with the computed costs of the desalted water.
