Engineering Aspects of a Nuclear Desalting Plant

Abstract

The Dual Purpose Desalination and Nuclear Power Plant is a transformation of the simple nuclear power and desalting plants that are being designed all over the world, but contains new main elements conceptually different from the analogous elements found in those simple plants and exhibiting special characteristics of considerable importance in the operational design of a modern desalination plant. One of the most important characteristics of the plant is the multistage controlled evaporator; i.e. the complex of stages vertically assembled containing thin film evaporators for the conversion of saline waters. The problem posed by the modular concept required considerable study and technical background, but the resulting co-ordinate procedure for the general assembly of the modules will produce an vessel-structure concept. The structural system is a central feature of great interest. Basically, it can be classified as an orthotropic plate system; however, its dual function of being a pressurized vessel and a supporting structure makes it an unusual engineering project.
