Abstract
A two-dimensional model is proposed to investigate the effect of matrix-aggregate bond failure on the stress-strain response of concrete. Stresses at the interface between the matrix and the aggregate are found for progressive bond separation utilizing the solution to the Hilbert problem as outlined by Muskhelishvili. A tensile crack extension criterion from fracture mechanics is employed and stress-strain curves are generated. The dependence of the inelastic response on bond strength, mortar strength, and size and volume fraction of aggregate is shown.
