Abstract

It is the purpose of this paper to present a theoretical analysis for unstiffened suspension bridges to determine the conditions under which an unstiffened bridge would be adequate. The analysis turns out to be far simpler than that of girder-stiffened bridges previously considered by the writer and yields a sharply defined, easily applied criterion for stability evaluation. The two case studies of the Wheeling Bridge and the George Washington Bridge serve as good examples to test the theory—with interest results.
