Kneading Compaction Of Asphalt Beam Specimens
Publication: Journal of the Highway Division
Volume 94, Issue 2
Abstract
A method for the compaction of asphaltic concrete beam specimens by means of the California kneading compactor is explored. The variations in density and void content of asphaltic concrete beam specimens compacted by a kneading compactor are analyzed. The compaction method and results appear to depend on the type, gradation, and surface texture of aggregates, viscosity of asphalt, temperature of mixture and applied load. The California kneading compactor seems to be quite suitable for molding beam specimens for the study of moduli of elasticity and rupture, flexure and fatigue characteristics of asphalt mixtures and flexible pavement. However, the mold assembly and compaction method need further improvement. The method presented herein is not intended to be the only method of molding a beam specimen, but it is anticipated to serve as a building block toward the attainment of greatly improved asphaltic concrete beam specimens in the future.
