Tubular Sections In Highway Structures
Publication: Journal of the Highway Division
Volume 94, Issue 2
Abstract
The structural tubular section is finding increased application in highway structures because of its high structural efficiency, and its pleasing appearance. Round and rectangular structural tubes are now available in a wide variety of sizes and steel grades. Large tubes and box sections have been used extensively in large highway bridges. They are also finding application as bracing members in major bridges, and as the main members in pedestrian bridges. Several new design concepts are presented. European and United States usage of tubes in sign supports and towers is reviewed. It is concluded that the tube is an ideal section for this type of structure. The recently devised strong beam-weak post median barrier design, using square tubes, is explained. A review of recent studies on internal corrosion reveals that proper design will eliminate this problem. Pertinent provisions of various member design specifications are quoted, and tubular connection design is described and illustrated.
