Virus Concentration by Ultrafiltration
Publication: Journal of the Environmental Engineering Division
Volume 105, Issue 2
Abstract
A capillary membrane ultrafiltration unit was used for the concentration of poliovirus I from a volume of 100-l tap water. Backwashing the unit with either high pH glycine buffer or beef extract resulted in an average virus recovery of about 67%. In several cases where ultrafiltration and organic flocculation methods were combined and initial virus input was relatively low (between 39 pfu/100 l and 200 pfu/100 l of water), average virus recovery of about 80% was obtained. Average filtration time was 86 min. for all experiments.
