Effect of Design on Economy of Aerobic Digestion

Abstract
A method of design is proposed for establishing volume of aerobic digesters and for determining oxygen requirements. Typical digester designs were prepared for up to 36 mgd treatment plant capacity and estimates were made for digesters with diffused aeration and mechanical aerators. Round digester tanks and mechanical aerators proved to be the most economical solutions especially for larger digester volumes. Capital cost and capital cost plus operating cost per unit of digester are presented for comparison.
