Land-Use Model for Service Area Projection

Abstract
A new method for projecting future sewer service areas is developed, based on a model of land use and intra-urban migration behavior. The derivation of a partial differential equation describing residential population density profiles through time is based on an analogy to the recharge well in an unconfined aquifer, and an adaptation of Darcy's Law. A numerical solution of this equation, coupled with an evaluation of the changes in residential density at the service area periphery, is the basis for generating successive future sewer service areas. Because the model forces the user into an investigation of land-use changes, it is suggested that the method provides a more rational basis for the specification of design year flows for interceptors and sewage treatment facilities than do the traditional subjective expedients.
