Influence of Activated Sludge CRT on Adsorption

Publication: Journal of the Environmental Engineering Division
Volume 102, Issue 1

Abstract

The adsorbability of organic compounds in the effluent from an activated sludge process was examined as a function of cell residence time (CRT). The concentration of nonadsorbable organic material in the effluent in general decreased as CRT increased with a significant drop occurring between CRT values of 4.8 days and l2.3 days. The molecular size of these non-adsorbable compounds was examined using membrane and ultrafiltration techniques. The importance of the effluent concentration of nonadsorbable organic material and of the relationship between this concentration and the CRT of the activated sludge system relative to the design of a tertiary carbon adsorption system was stressed.
