Editor’s Note

Publication: Journal of Computing in Civil Engineering
Volume 38, Issue 3
We are delighted and deeply honored to assume the role of coeditors in chief for ASCE’s esteemed Journal of Computing in Civil Engineering (JCCE). JCCE is one of the world’s leading journals in our field, with an editorial board that includes numerous highly acclaimed scholars. We thank ASCE and its Computing Division for entrusting us with this significant responsibility. We also express our appreciation to Professor Ray Issa, the outgoing journal editor, for his outstanding leadership over the past eight years. Additionally, we are humbled to follow in the footsteps of the remarkable leaders who have contributed to the Journal’s excellence, including previous editors Mark Abkowitz, William Rasdorf, James Garrett, and Lucio Soibelman. We eagerly look forward to collaborating with readers, authors, reviewers, and the editorial board to continue on the path of excellence and growth.
The field of computing in civil engineering is diverse and continually evolving. With the rapid advancement of data science and artificial intelligence, we are witnessing an unparalleled expansion of the Journal’s leadership, body of knowledge, and impact. We perceive an opportunity to enhance its success and influence by extending its reach into emerging computing domains and broader civil engineering communities. The Journal’s scope encompasses vital emerging areas of computing, such as big data analytics, artificial intelligence, building information modeling, sensors and sensing systems, automation, robotics, and their applications across various civil engineering subdomains, including structures, materials, water resources, geotechnical engineering, construction, transportation, and infrastructure systems.
Our vision for the Journal revolves around four core pillars:
1.
Enhancing intellectual quality, diversity, and impact. Our goal is to promote intellectual diversity while enhancing the rigor of peer review. This entails attracting authors and readers to the Journal with high-quality research and innovative ideas from diverse backgrounds, intellectual communities, and subfields within computing in civil engineering.
2.
Improving the review process. We are committed to continuously enhancing the speed, consistency, and rigor of the review process. This is essential to encourage authors to publish their best and most timely research. We will collaborate closely with the editorial board to evaluate existing processes, explore potential innovations, and implement proactive measures. We extend an invitation to our readers to become reviewers for the Journal, and we express our gratitude to our current reviewers for their dedication and service.
3.
Expanding the Journal community. We aspire to expand the Journal’s community beyond civil engineering by welcoming experts from other domains as associate editors, authors, and reviewers. These experts may hail from interactive computing, computer engineering, human–robot interaction, and the social sciences, all of which represent common collaborative areas for recent projects in civil engineering. We firmly believe that diversity in authorship and peer review will be key factors in growing the success and impact of the Journal.
4.
Collaborative visioning and shared governance. We are dedicated to working closely with the editorial board on envisioning the Journal’s future and strategic planning. We eagerly welcome suggestions from all authors and readers as we strive for continuous improvement and growth.
We are confident that, together, with the support of our esteemed editorial board, authors, reviewers, and readers, we will realize our vision and further cement the Journal of Computing in Civil Engineering as the world’s preeminent scholarly publication in our field. We are firmly committed to enhancing the Journal’s quality, reputation, and visibility.
Yong Kwon Cho, Coeditor.
